Examining Horror in The Blair Witch Project
The Blair Witch is a movie, filmed in an amateur documentary style to create realism, to make the audience believe that the footage is real. It was filmed differently to conventional horror films as a camcorder and a black and white film camera were used. It was also filmed from the perspective of the characters, usually Heather. Together, these factors create realistic scenes, which actually fooled audiences in the first few months of its release. A lot of hype was built up before it was released, for example fake Internet sites were created, containing bogus information on the witch and on Blair. It is an innovative, modern and contemporary horror, which plays on the audiences own feelings of fear through realism and the unknown. It was made in 1999 and was first released at The Sundance Film Festival. It was created and directed by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez.
The film begins when information is shown on the screen telling the audience that the characters in the film had disappeared, and have not been seen since, and that this was the actual footage that was found in the woods, where they had been. This information is shown on a black background and writing is in white, giving a creepy, sinister effect, as it appears to be glowing...
