The term "dysfunctional family" has been used so commonly over the years that it is hard to define. In order to define a dysfunctional family, one must first define what constitutes a functional or healthy family. There are a lot of differences in what each individual considers to be the definition of a normal family. There are common traits found in families that are considered to be healthy, and other traits found in families experiencing excessive stress that can lead to "dysfunctional" behavior. Family dysfunction can be any condition that interferes with healthy family functioning.
My research has revealed that the term dysfunctional family is used casually in popular culture. Health care professionals define the dysfunctional family as one where the relationship among family members is not conducive to emotional and physical health. Sexual or physical abuse, alcohol and drug addiction, delinquency and behavior problems are some of the conditions commonly associated with dysfunctional family relationships.
The effects on children can linger long after they grow up and leave the family when problems such as parental alcoholism, drug abuse, mental illness, physical, sexual abuse and extreme parental control interfere with family functioning.
