Marriage is defined as, "the legal union between a man and a woman (husband and wife)." The mayor of San Francisco has recently allowed "gay marriages" to be performed. He has stated that homosexuals should have the same protection under the law as heterosexuals. Eligibility for marriage has undergone many major changes during the existence of the U.S. and Canada, however; federal, state, and provincial laws in North America have always restricted marriage to partners of opposite sex. Ontario and British Columbia began to issue marriage licenses and to record marriages of same-sex couples in mid-2003 and has made the issue more controversial especially to "gay marriage" opponents.
