Since the formation of the internet, access to information around the world has easily become obtainable even in the comfort of our own homes. Through the discovery of this breakthrough, the internet has allowed many individuals to envision, dream and even create many business/personal opportunities to succeed a successful lifestyle. These remarkable changes have affected the world as a whole which significantly adds problems for governments and private individuals seeking to protect their intellectual property rights. By definition, intellectual property rights are those rights that give legal protection to the output of creative energy. Creative energy as a whole includes patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets. All such factors can be registered at the Canadian Intellectual Property Office. This essay shall touch upon the factors which constitutes intellectual property, as well as discuss how society has changed within the past tens years to significantly evolve our industry, academia, and general public.
Through the process of a patent, the government gives the inventor the right to prohibit others from making, using or selling your invention from the day the patent is granted up to a maximum of 20 years. The patent thus can be sold, licensed or used as an asset to negotiate funding.
