Rotary and Dual Tone Multi-frequency (DTMF)
Dual Tone Multi-frequency dialing involves using two different tones to represent a digit when dialing a phone, also referred to as push-button dialing or touch tone dialing. The central office equipment recognizes the numbers pushed and will make the necessary connections.
Rotary dialing consists of a wheel attached to the face of the phone; the wheel had ten openings in it that one could put their finger in and spin the dial to the appropriate number. When released the wheel would return to its original position and another number could be dialed. When dialed this system caused the line to pulse and would control the equipment located at the central office.
Wide Area Telecommunications Service (WATS) and leased lines
A WATS line is a dedicated line that is typically leased to provide telecommunications between two geographical locations. These lines are either incoming or outgoing but never both. These lines are not charged on the length of the call like typical long distance lines, but rather they are charged according to the size of the area the line is being sent to.
