Imperialism is the policy or action by which one country controls another country or territory. Most of the control is gained by military means to gain economic and political advantages. An imperialist government wants to obtain raw materials, inexpensive labor and also profit from new markets for its exports. Imperialism has been the driving force behind most wars, territorial expansion, and cultural change. The main reason for a nation to attain foreign territories is based on economic profit. By controlling their colonies they are able to produce more manufactured goods and have additional markets set up for the products. A nation's motives for imperialism may also be for military strategy. With territory near their borders, they are able to protect themselves from foreign attack. Many imperialist nations didn't understand their colonies' custom which would result in destroying their old ways of life. With imperialism also come benefits where the colonial powers build new communications and transportation systems, establish universities and reform the government and society...
