Moby Dick Symbolism
Herman Melville's epic Moby Dick, presents the reader many different symbols, of which the reader may interpret in many different ways. There are symbols all over the story itself. These symbols are vast in being that they're evident in the various characters, settings, and the overall events that occur in the novel. Melville successfully attracts many critics, who still today, can't agree as to what these were meant to symbolize.
The characters in Moby Dick are said to represent various things. Many critics believe that Captain Ahab is meant to represent Ahab from the Bible. Ahab was the 7th king of Israel who married Jezebel. Ahab was corrupted by Jezebel and built a pagan temple. Elijah warned Ahab that the country would suffer from drought if the cult of Baal was not removed from the land of Israel. Elijah is also presented in the novel...
