Farewell to Manzanar: A thematic analysis

Farewell to Manzanar Farewell to Manzanar is a book that tells us about the complexities of the life of an American-born Japanese girl during pre, during and post-World War II times; a girl who struggles to achieve equality in a xenophobic country that rejects any differences in appearance, but also thought. This book is full of symbols intertwining in a complex garden of the racialist attitudes that the “free world” maintains towards those who are considered a menace to their “free” and “equal” way of living… these symbols are constant thru ought the novel… and while trying to decide which symbol I should have written about, I kept in mind that this symbol had to appropriately represent all of Jeanne’s feelings towards this situation, but also the situation’s attitude towards her. Based on these criteria, I believe that the symbol that could best represent Jeanne and her feelings is her dream. After the war, Jeanne Wakazuki moved to Long Island, and resumed school while living in the Cabrillo Homes housing project.
