Ben Epstein A Sports Icon: What is an Icon? Webster’s defines an icon as one who is the object of great attention and devotion; an idol. When this definition is put into flesh and blood , the results are that of Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Joe DiMaggio, and Bade Didrickson. There is no set mold for what a sports icon should be, but when comparing icons of the 1930’s with those of the 1990’s, it is plain to see that certain traits are timeless and others are meant for their own place and time. The front pages of the 1930's often did not bring good news.
