John Proctor s Commitment

... In the book “The Crucible”, John had difficulties standing up to his responsibilities. Sometimes it can be hard to make a commitment to society as John demonstrates through events such as keeping the secret of his affair, confessing to a lie to save himself, and then dying for the good of the cause, which explains his change of heart towards his commitment to society.

     The first way that John didn’t live up to his promise to society is by neglecting to confess about his crime of adultery. Abigail, a 17-year-old girl, had a one-time relationship with John Proctor, which makes her fall in love with him. Even though John is a married man who is loyal to his wife, Abigail tries to convince John to leave his wife, Elizabeth and to be with her, but John refuses and says “’Abby, you’ll put it out of mind.
