In the 10th to 14th centuries Europe operated under a system of government called the feudal system. Feudal times were not very easy for most people. If you were lucky you were born into a wealthy family, but most of the time you would have to work day in day out to just eat for a day.
The Catholic Church was pretty much the ultimate power during the feudal times. Most of the time the church could overpower the king. Priests were the only ones who learned how to read during the middle ages. All of the commoners looked to the Church and God for help with their problems. If something bad were to happen they would believe that it was God who was punishing them for their sins. The church also taxed people a 10% tax called tithe.
