Introduction
In the north part of Halifax was a small town by the name of Africville. With only a population of four hundred people, Africville was not a very big or prosperous town. To most people, Africville was just a slum or ghetto that was populated by descendants of former black slaves who escaped during the War of 1812. To the residents of Africville, it was much more than that. It was more than a small town; it was a community where the black people could live without the fear of racism or discrimination. It was not just a place to live, it was a home. However, in 1970, Africville was destroyed. Bulldozers came during the night and demolished all the buildings including houses. The Halifax city council decided that Africville was to be an industrial location and forced the residents to relocate. It is difficult to tell exactly why Africville was destroyed because the decision made by the Halifax city council can be looked at different ways...
