The regulation of dependency in parent-child relationships

Purpose: The goal of this study is to determine the effects that a parent with low self-esteem has on a child. In addition, the aim was to determine if the amount of perceived love received from the other in a parent-child relationship is dependant on the self-esteems of the parents and children. Lastly, this research was performed in order to discover whether or not the insecurities about a close other's regard make it difficult for low self-esteem people to form satisfying romantic and family relationships.
Rationale: The authors chose to conduct this study to either confirm or debunk recent study findings that people with low self-esteem tend to be less satisfied with their relationships. They wished to know why low self-esteem people might view their relationships negatively. The researchers strongly believe that people with low self-esteem are not loved by their romantic partner any less than those with high self-esteem; so why do low self-esteem people have the perception that they are generally "less loved"? Finally, the researchers wanted to confirm their theory that the same dependency regulation dynamics observed in romantic relationships may surface in family relationships.
