The Ku Klux Klan are more simply known as the KKK. It is a hate based group from the United States. It originated after the civil war and was not intended to have the power that it grew to have. It became so powerful that blacks, Jews, Catholics and others feared the group. The Ku Klux Klan has affected the United States in a negative manner and has increased racism for us today. The Ku Klux Klan is against any minority group and is about keeping white supremacy. When the Ku Klux Klan was formed it was intended to be a social club not a white supremacy group. The Ku Klux Klan was formed when six confederate veterans got together one night out of sheer boredom from living a small town life. The small town was Pulaski Tennessee. Over the next couple weeks the six men recruited new members. They had extensive initiation ceremonies much like the ones for fraternities. It consisted of blind folding the recruit, subjecting him to rough handling and the reciting of silly oaths. After they were brought to the “royal alter” where he was invested with the “royal crown”. But in order to even be able to join the KKK member one would have to be a native born American who is very loyal to their country. The Ku Klux Klan has a specific uniform that today we connect to the Klan. The uniform is a white sheet, white pointy hat and a white mask. The uniform came together when the original six wanted to show off they disguised themselves in white sheets and rode around town on horseback. Also the uniform is a way of seeking revenge since they lost in the civil war and did not want the blacks to be free. . “They wore white robes & hoods because they were supposed to look like dead soldiers that rose from the dead to seek revenge.” (Gina Higgins) On the top left side of the white robe is the Ku Klux Klan’s official symbol. On the patch there is a cross with a flame in the middle. It is a cross and a flame because the KKK also has rituals, their most common ritual is burning crosses.
