A JUDGEMENT IN STONE Summary A Judgement in stone, written by Ruth Rendell (born in 1941 in Essex, she's one of England's most popular writers), is a very special crime novel. After the first page, the reader already knows that Eunice Parchmann has killed the Coverdale family. We also know why : Eunice is illiterate. The Coverdales live near London. They belong to the upper society. They are looking for a housekeeper. Eunice applies for the job and is hired. Nobody knows that she’s illiterate. Eunice hides it. She has had a difficult childhood and never really went to school. She has no friends, she can’t drive. In spite of that, Eunice always does her work very well. But soon, George Coverdale notices that something goes wrong. First Eunice never goes out and never shows any feelings. She often watches TV, especially violent films. When the Coverdales propose her a car, she says that her sight was too bad to learn to drive. She is more and more annoyed because the Coverdales take care of her and because there are a lot of newspapers, magazines and written notes all around her. Then Eunice meets Joan. She leads a strange life. She has been a prostitute, now has a store led with disastrous inefficienty with her husband, and is a member of the Epiphany Church.
