Take Your Daughter to Work Day. The day I discovered science. I remember scurrying to keep up with my dad as he waltzed me into his laboratory at the University of Washington. While he propped me on a stool, my eyes scanned the room in wonder at translucent x-ray charts, carelessly strewn flasks, and old-fashioned scales, artifacts of a strange world where people wore white coats. It seemed to be a place of discovery, questioning, and understanding. And, as I observed this strange environment, my own questions about the world surfaced. How do machines work? What are animals made of? What does it mean to be alive? Suddenly, my thoughts were broken by my dad dangling a white rat proudly in my face before placing it on a table, cutting it open and displaying its innards. So began my first anatomy lesson. Throughout my childhood, I assumed I was relatively normal, except that I was the only girl to wear an oversized white lab coat on Career Day.
