In Cinema, light is often used to set the focus of the scene on a specific character. For example, in The Godfather, when we see Vito Corleone for the first time in the film, he is in his office and the screen is all black. We only see Don Corleone sitting in front of his huge desk. Plus, the light is used a very specific way here. There is only half of Corleone’s face lighten. Generally, in the cinema, this process is used to show a character’s dualistic mind. The dark represents his bad side, Corleone is in the mafia, and the bright side symbolizes his good side, concerning Vito Corleone, he is a good father for his children, he always wanted the best for them. Light is a very useful way to convey emotions to people. Gordon Willis intentionally lets Vito Corleone’s eyes in the dark in The Godfather. This process gives the impression that Vito Corleone is a mysterious man. It is very hard to see what people feel if we don’t see their eyes.
