The Deputy Prime Minister today provided a ray of hope to students who missed out on places to pursue medicine, but warned others against turning university admissions into a racial issue.
Datuk Seri Najib Razak said the Government would look into giving the 128 students scholarships to study in private colleges. They had not been offered places in the medical faculties of public universities despite obtaining the maximum Cumulative Grade Point Average of 4.0.
He also said their plight was likely to be discussed at Wednesday's Cabinet meeting.
The DPM was less than charitable in his comments on those who alleged that the merit system had disadvantaged Chinese and Indian students. He said these people were playing a dangerous game by stirring racial sentiments.
Under the merit system, non-Bumiputeras had more places than under the quota system, he said.
"Non-Bumiputeras should be happy about this. It is inappropriate for anyone to stir up racial sentiments and create unhappiness among the different races by turning this into a racial issue...
