This discussion will help you focus on one more aspect of short story analysis, that of characters. When a writer considers writing a discussion about a short story or work of fiction, he or she can isolate the essay so that most of the focus is on the characters. Or one can integrate other aspects of analysis in with a discussion of character analysisthereby making such a discussion a small part of a larger work.
At any rate, such a discussion can proceed along these lines. One can describe the construction of the characters in the short story. Four key words should be used during the discussionflat, round, dynamic, static. These words describe the limits placed on the character's development.
If a character is flat, scholars of literature are saying that the character is written with few details.
If the character is round, the writer has spent some time developing details associated with the character.
A dynamic character changes in some significant manner by the end of the story...
