Deep in the forest the hunt begins. Hoof beats are the only sound listened for.
The 'whiz' of the spear is heard followed by a squeal of pain, a squeal that means victory
for young Jack and his hunting tribe. Jack may be satisfied at the moment but there are
other events in this novel, Lord of the Flies, where William Golding shows Jack's
growing need for a leadership role. When Jack suggests to Ralph the he should take his
choir and turn them into a hunting team in which he should be the leader, it shows Jack's
growing need for power. Another point where we see Jack's growing need for power
escalate is when he totally separates from Ralph's tribe. This is where Jack takes total
control and is the dominant supreme dictator, where even his thoughts are strict law. In
Golding's novel, Lord of the Flies, we can clearly see that two types of government are
being looked at: Ralph's Democracy and Jack's Dictatorship. Through many events, we
can clearly see that Jack used his dictatorship to his advantage. Slowly but surely, Jack
turns some of the original democratic followers to his side using torture methods and
brainwashing, then begins killing off the ones who cannot be turned...
