It’s high school it’s not really that important – This is amazingly hard to understand when you’re actually in high school. Be out of it for over a year and it becomes abundantly clear. Don’t act like your speech is the end of something spectacular, it’s usually not. Have fun - A serious compelling speech can still be fun. Be yourself – This sounds like advice everyone gives. Well maybe. But I really mean it. If you usually speak with a little stutter then speak with a stutter. Don’t beat yourself up trying to be an eloquent public speaker if you’re not. No one appreciates a polished fake. No matter how true or good they may seem, don’t say the following cliché phrases or any of their variations. We are the leaders of tomorrow This isn’t the end it’s a new beginning We came into this school as strangers and are leaving as friends Among us sits the scientist who will cure (insert bad thing here) We all came in as strangers and left as (insert school animal/team name) Wear sunscreen Cherish these days We’ll look back and say that these years were the best in our lives As you sit in front of me We are finally out of here We will all go separate ways We’ve gained so much We’ll look back on these days Be true to yourself New chapter in our lives We'll never forget each other/or these years Even though you are elected as the valedictorian it doesn’t mean you embody the class’ sentiments – Go and talk to those who don’t talk.
