Peter Singer: One World - The Ethics of Globalisation
Singer's chapter 4 - One Law
Singer breaks up this chapter into 8 sections. Of which there is an underlying theme surrounding intervention and protection.
I thought the chapter was quite in depth in some of its references examples and definitions but this provided the scope for easier understanding.
The chapter was very informative and interesting to read particularly as these issues are in current events every day.
It was clear and well written and I felt that overall Singer's opinion on intervention and protection should remain solely with the UN but the UN also requiring reform. I'd go into more detail but there was a lot of information in 46 pages.
In general however I felt that I had a better understanding of both sides of the argument surrounding the intervention and protection of states and the ideas surrounding international law.
Although the Lecture and the other reading was more to do with Terrorism and War - this chapter diverts from this topic as a broad subject and focuses on the UN and International governance.
Many of the issues raised in this chapter can be very controversial so I have two main questions that I'd like to raise but before that I thought I'd bring up some of the good points Singer made with reference to the bible which I thought was an interesting way of putting forward his argument.
In the first section titled "The Need For Intervention" Singer discusses the idea of genocide and violence and gives a very interesting link to the bible regarding genocide...
