The problem is that people go to cities in search of a better life, but in the cities they are not much better off, than they were in the country. Over the past twenty-five years the percentage of people living in urban centers has more than doubled (while rural population only grew by a third.). In Asia, over two-thirds, of the population growth, is due to migration from rural areas. In developing countries, 63% of the population lived in urban areas in 1990, that increased to 71% by 2000, and is projected to increase to 80% by 2025. This growth puts a severe strain on the infrastructure of the cities.
This urban population growth has cause excessive poverty levels. In African countries, at least half the population is below the poverty line. In Zambia 86% of the population is below the poverty line, and in Nigeria 60% of our population is below the poverty line. In Mozambique 82 percent of families considered themselves to be poor, and 61 percent were living in absolute poverty...
