Barbara Pentland is one of the famous classical composers of Canada. She successively acted as composer, pianist, teacher and pioneer. She has been giving Canadian culture and enormously musical legacy of artistic wisdom and extraordinary depth.
Barbara Pentland was born in Winnipeg in 1912. Despite the strong disapproval from her conventional and socially prominent parents, who regarded her desire to compose as eccentric and, probably, too 'exciting' for a delicate child, she began to write music at the age of nine. She nevertheless continued to write music surreptitiously during her school years in Montreal. Her first encouragement to compose came from Frederick H. Blair, who taught her piano and theory. Because of her heart disorder she was eventually allowed to study composition by her parents until she finished school in Paris.
