The Philadelphia Inquirer and the Philadelphia Daily News are two major mass media outlets in the region. Although both owned by the same company, these two papers differ a great deal in who their target audience is. The big three targets for most mass media are age, income and education. Race and gender are also taken into account. By reviewing both the Inquirer and the Daily News, one can determine who the main target audience is and how this group is successfully targeted. The Philadelphia Daily News is considered the “people paper,” at least that is what is states on the cover. By reading the Daily News one can notice the simplicity of it. Smaller columns, many pictures, to-the-point articles, simply the ease of having a newspaper formatted like a book, and most importantly an eye-catching cover story. Although national news can be read, there is more of an interest in the local news and entertainment.
