Overview of Australian aid to Bangladesh

Australia contributes around 75 000 metric tonnes of Australian wheat as food aid to Bangladesh every year.
A lesser amount of Australia's wheat contribution is also allocated to the World Food Program's School Feeding Programme in North West districts of the country.
Australia began its official aid program with Bangladesh, one of the poorest countries in Asia, Thirty two years ago. Since then it has provided more than $500 million in assistance and more than half of this in food aid.
Sixty out of every thousand children born die in their first year, and over 60 per cent of women and 40 per cent of men are illiterate. The national poverty level sits around 50%.
The majority of Australian aid goes to the Northwest of Bangladesh towards the Indian border. This area is prone to flood during the rainy season, cold snaps during winter when people die from the cold and severe heat during summer...
