When a pro athlete has a commercial with young kids saying they want to be like them, like it or not they have stepped in the world of role model.”
The parents have to teach their kids that just because this athletes has money plays in the professional leagues such as: NBA, NFL,WNBA ,MLB does not mean they are role models. Most athletes are not even close to being a role model, they a lot of work to do with their behavior. Parents should take a larger responsibility and care about being role models.
Douglas Abrams, a journalist from Black Issues in Higher Education stated:
“Children who are not athletically inclined, however, need adult role models”. ... Children of functional families also have much to learn from role models outside the home. ‘Children need role models in the flesh, ones they can observe first hand, turn to for advice and trust with confidences. ... ”
Nevertheless kids watch these pro athletes and pick up their habits. Ian Bellis author of the book “The Best Role Model In Pro Sports” stated that “So should kids and teenagers look at professional athletes ad role models.
