Battle of Tannenburg
The Battle of Tannenburg was fought in the opening days of World War I in an area that today is northeastern Poland. It was Russia's worst defeat in World War I. In fact, the Russian army never fully recovered from the battle. At the start of the war, Alexander Samsonov was appointed commander of the Russian Second Army.
In August 1914, Russia prepared to invade German territory to aid France. They hoped that in forcing Germany to defend itself in the east, it would slow their advance in the west.
