Leonard da Vinci was arguably the most influential painter and thinker of his time. He was a great scientist and mathematician, not to mention an extremely talented painter. His life was full of learning and art as well as travel and political affiliations. By the time he died in 1519 he was renowned all across Europe and was greatly beloved by the king of France. Leonardo was one of the greatest painters and scientists in history, a true Renaissance man.
Leonardo began his life on April 15, 1452, in a small town outside of Florence, Italy. His birthplace, the town of Vinci, was where they derived his last name (in Italian, da means "from"). His father was a well to do legal representative named San Piero and his mother was a peasant girl named Caterina. Since Leonardo was an illegitimate son he was placed in his fathers custody. Growing up in his father's house had its advantages as he had access to texts and manuscripts of all sorts and was exposed to painting and art as well...
