The Chimney Sweeper A little black thing among the snow, Crying ''weep! 'weep' in notes of woe! "Where are thy father & mother? say?" "They are both gone up to the church to pray. "Because I was happy upon the heath, "And smil'd among the winter's snow, "They clothed me in the clothes of death, "And taught me to sing the notes of woe. "And because I am happy & dance & sing, "They think they have done me no injury, "And are gone to praise God and his Priest & King, "Who make up a heaven of our misery." This poem discusses the misery of a child who is seemingly happy on the outside, yet is carrying terrible burdens internally. In the beginning of the poem, he is stumbled upon in the snow, being much darker himself from his duties than the clean and pristine snow around him. He is asked about his parents, and responds that since he had always seemed so content and happy, even in the face of his work, his parents only burdened him with more because his external persona seemed to be able to handle it.
