The Pearl, by John Steinbeck, is a parable novel in which a life lesson is taught. The story is about a man named Kino, a simple villager, who finds a great pearl while diving. The story tells about how the great pearl changes and alters Kino's life in a very drastic way. In the story, the pearl serves as a symbol for different meanings. The symbol the pearl projects changes many times through out the story.
In the beginning of the story, Kino discovers the pearl and is very grateful and astonished at its bringing of good fortune and its perfect beauty. When Kino catches his first glance at the pearl, he describes it as "perfect as the moon." He also said that the pearl " captured light and gave it back in silver incandescence." Kino and Juana have many dreams for themselves and their son Coyotito, and they believe that the pearl can make the dreams come true. Also, because the villagers don't have much knowledge of how the world works, Juana believes the pearl to be magic and filled with goodness, for Coyotito starts to heal from his scorpion bite right after the pearl is found...
