Everyone you meet has an effect on your life. Some are good and some are bad. Each person shapes your views on different situations and how open minded you are. In Nathanael West's novel, The Day of the Locust, people are greatly effected by other peoples actions.
Tod Hackett, the protagonist in The Day of the Locust, is a Hollywood set and costume designer who is more interested in the imported, lower middle class Western immigrants, rather than the movie stars. Tod labels these people as the ones that "have come to California to die". He decides to paint them in his next masterpiece called "The Burning of Los Angeles". Tod has only lived in Los Angeles for about three months, so he has acquired only a few friends. These would be Abe Kusich, a dwarf bookie, Faye Greener, a want-to-be film star, and Harry Greener, Faye's father. Tod has a desire to be with Faye, but they have come to an agreement to just be friends...
