The function of welfare within our society has always been contentious and controversial. Welfare is defined as Financial or other aid provided by the government, to people in need, unfortunately authors Wahneema Lubiano and Gwendolyn Mink deem otherwise. In its place both Lubiano and Mink believe that the United States welfare system is a hindrance in America’s racial, poverty and sexist problems. The welfare system does not provide adequate or sufficient aid to its welfare recipients. Instead the United States welfare system has set multiple barriers and numerous restrictions on its beneficiaries, creating an environment and setting surroundings that generalize and assembles a specific stereotype adding to the afore mentioned problems. ...
Gwendolyn Mink states that welfare is a condition of women’s equality, however welfare in the United States seems to impose on the rights of women, rights that are defined by Mink as components of citizenship.
