Reading “The Good Earth” and “How Much Land Does A Man Need” opens your eyes to how much land is appreciated in places that are rich in agriculture. These two books show examples of one man’s love and need for the land, how another’s greed led to his demise, and how a tribe treats their land.
In “The Good Earth,” the main character Wang Lung has a strong love of the land, which enables his piety, his good sense, his frugality, his work ethic, and his love of family. Pahom, the main character in “How Much Land Does A Man Need” thinks of the land as an asset and doesn’t embrace it as his life, as Wang Lung does. Finally, in “How Much Land Does A Man Need” they speak of a Bashkir Tribe, which doesn’t really care for the land even though he didnt love it as passionately as Wang Lung. He was greedy in his approach to obtain land and was not able to appreciate it. Finally, the Bashkirs didnt really care for their land that much. ... They weren’t very conservative of their land, and felt they needed to get rid of some because they had too much.
