For all people, effective communication skills are necessary in forming great relationships. Parents and children especially must utilize these skills because it is essential to developing a life-long relationship between the two. Although it may be difficult at times to always accentuate communication methods and may require discipline and a lengthy amount of time, it is the universal commonality in all lasting relationships. Three strategies that are the most effective are spending time with each other, listening to what the other has to say, and developing trust. Without the use of these strategies it is almost impossible to achieve an excellent connection with somebody else.
Spending time with each other is the starting point and is vital in forming successful relationships. For a strong bond to form, both the parents and kids must be satisfied and willing to use the strategies; it is not solely the kids responsibility to use good strategies. For example, in a survey done by the YMCA, parents believe that the biggest concern is drugs and alcohol, while the children think it is spending more time with their parents. The parents may be overlooking the importance of quality time spent with their kids and the positive effects it can have on them. Spending time with each other allows them to get to know each other, become comfortable with who they are, and essentially allow them to open up to one another...
