Photography of our time has established itself as the universal language, surpassing even written words as a form of communication. "In our hands, the camera gives us nothing less than one of our most powerful means of self-expression." (Garret, 15) Photographs are used for memories-memories of the past in our lives, reminders of ourselves and loved ones. "Yes, most of us are picture takers, and almost all of us with we were better at it, now thanks to john garret and what he has given us in this book, we can be." (Garret, 14) Throughout the book he offers particularly valuable advice on how to master what successful photographers have long known to be the three most basic elements of great photographs- light, composition, and capturing the moment.
