"The key conflict of our time is between pluralism and unitarism." (Rasmussen & Boxall, 1995, p. 61). This essay will discuss some of the key conflicts and issues in history which make this statement true. Firstly this essay will discuss the different ideologies that the pluralist and unitarist model impose on an employment relationship. As the government plays a pivotal role in employment relations we will also discuss critical pieces of legislation passed down by government such as the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act 1894 that tries to improve working conditions and balance out the power between workers and employers. Hence as a result of the legislation, look further into the impact that it made on society, the political and economic system of the time. Other key issues that will be discussed in this essay will be the 1951 Waterfront Dispute, legislation such as the, 1987 Labour Relations Acts, 1991 Employment Contracts Act, and the latest 2000 Employment Relations Act.
