Looking Back into History W.E.B. Du Bois is one of the most influential black writers of our time. His collection of essays titled “ The Souls of Black Folk” has been in print for over one hundred years. A major reason why the collection of essays has lasted so long is because it appeals to all African American readers. Du Bois shows very important human emotions to appeal to his readers. He uses examples to appeal to his readers. In a few essays, he talks of slavery and the struggle for blacks to overcome it. Du Bois is not afraid to tell his readers what he believes is true. This is why the book is so important to the black community today. It gives us a sense of understanding; it is like someone for once is expressing the feeling that has been suppressed for many years. I believe that this collection of essays does an excellent job of expressing the feelings of the black community. Du Bois is a wonderful writer who uses his knowledge of the world and the black community to make his point to readers. In his collection of essays, Du Bois discusses many important topics that are of concern to African Americans at the time. Du Bois talks about the years after the Civil War and the Freedmen’s Bureau. He discusses how it failed to work out. He also talks about the Reconstruction and then onto Booker T. Washington. In essay three of the collection, Du Bois talks of how Washington has become a spokesperson for the black community. Du Bois states that Washington is the wrong person to look up to because, Washington gives out “ an old attitude of adjustment and submission”. Du Bois says that this policy is adjusting to segregation will only hurt the fight for equal rights. As the collection continues, Du Bois tells a story about African Americans rising above to gain a good education and then being reprimanded for it.
