Changing the classroom: Hypermedia and multimedia in the educational environment.
Hypertext and multimedia applications are being used increasingly in today's educational environment. There are many reasons for the emergence of these new tools and their application in the classroom. Rapidly developing technology and their cost effectiveness have made computers in almost every classroom a reality. With computers, new possibilities in teaching and learning methods become available. Multimedia applications such as graphic pictures, audio clips and video now bring to life concepts and ideas that were once stuck in the one dimensional world of text and the spoken word. Hypertext and hypermedia encourage and make it possible to allow students to take an active participation in their learning. While the potential for learning utilizing this new medium is apparent, does the potential outweigh the practical application? To date, there have been many studies involving the effectiveness of hypermedia in the classroom but the results must still be classified as inconclusive (Azevedo).
