The Essential Method
There is no other time that it is more obvious of our social class differences than when we fill out our taxes. Everyone knows that if they are getting taxed strongly, it is due to them bringing in a large salary for the year. If they happen to get out with not paying a high percentage of their income, the reason is because they don't make as much as others. Class distinction has always occurred throughout the world's history, only presented to the public in other ways. For example, in the seventeenth century, a simple fact such as the clothing worn by each class was an obvious indicator of what class it was they belonged to. David Teniers, a popular painter of this century, shows us these obvious distinctions in his painting Steen Castle. Teniers shows his support for the lower and middle class through not only the clothing, but also other factors such as the bridge and the sky.
This landscape painting shows a unique subject matter in a couple of different ways. This painting is also unique in that it looks to reveal a historical occurrence. There seems to have been a problem of peace and unity of a European country that couldn't get along or solve their problems over class differences...
