Premier Furniture Company, Inc. Storage Expansion Project
The Premier Furniture Company, Inc., of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, began as a small family business in 1950. Two brothers, Joe and John Smith, were working for another local furniture manufacturer and had a strong interest in building quality, hand-made furniture. After several years of working for someone else, both Joe and John had worked their way up to master carpenters, having served as both apprentice and journeymen carpenters. Two years later, the brothers made the decision to branch out and start their own company. They rented a huge warehouse in what is now referred to as Milwaukee's Third Ward. The size of the warehouse allowed them to set up the manufacturing, shipping and receiving divisions, as well as their residence, all under one roof.
By the end of their first summer in business, the orders that were coming in were more than the two brothers could handle by themselves. They hired five journeymen carpenters to be trained the way the Smith brothers wanted, to assist in furniture construction...
