Politics
After the Civil War, politics lost their focus; the 2 parties did not have any compelling national issues
The Democrats were interested in a more local type gov't, states and individual rights.
The Republicans were more interested in the nation as a whole, OK with high tariffs for protection.
Because of the Panic of 1893 and subsequent depression; people became filled with hostility against the immigrants; it changed the way they looked @ themselves and how they looked @ the gov't.
All the presidents of the 2nd of the 1800s were Republican except Grover Cleveland. The elections were almost predictable, as far as how the states would vote. Family, ethnicity, religion were reasons why to vote along party lines. Only 2 exceptions: 1888 when the Rep. Victory (Pres. And both houses) and then in 1892 with a Dem. Victory (pres...
