Antoinette Movie Review The Wide Sargasso Sea

Every book is focused around a main character with a primary flaw or a characteristic that sets up the story. In the movie from the novel Wide Sargasso Sea, that character is Antoinette. As the story begins, she is portrayed as a normal individual but along the path of her life; certain events take place in a way that she is driven to a hysterical mental state.
Although both Antoinette and her mother are very similar in character, they are portrayed to be distant. From childhood Antoinette was faced with the unfortunate circumstance of having a mother that showed lack of acknowledgement and care for her. Although, in a way, her mother did acknowledge her presence; there is a significant amount of favoritism shown towards her younger brother Pierre. This is what begins her mental turmoil. Later in the movie, it is shown that her brother is killed in a house fire and also that her mother was mentally disturbed because of this event. This suggests that perhaps Antoinette had an inclination towards being mentally disturbed.
Another antagonist in Antoinette's life is her husband Rochester, who to begin with was paid to marry her; which she is unaware of throughout the movie...
