THE EFFECTIVE USE OF INFORMATION HANDLING SOFTWARE IN THE TEACHING OF MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE.
Information handling software is a resource to support and enhance children's learning in mathematics and science. When used appropriately it can contribute to the development of subject-specific knowledge and process skills (Wankerton, 1992, in Iziah, 1992). Its educational potential is said to lie in its various capabilities (Beare, 1996). As well as using it as an aid to enhance learning, teachers are increasingly making use of it as a medium to assist their teaching (Byrne & Sharp, 2002; Briggs & Pritchard, 2002). There are numerous information handling packages available which are being used in schools to enhance the learning and teaching of mathematics and science. However, in this assignment I shall only concern myself with the following three: databases, spreadsheets and active-x software. Although databases and spreadsheets are defined as 'active-x applications' (Underwood & Underwood, 1990; Sharp et al., 2002) in this assignment I shall use the term 'Active-x software' to refer to the various programs entailed there in.
Data handling software is a valuable adjunction to the teaching in mathematics and science, particularly in the conduction of mathematical and scientific investigations (Underwood & Blair, 1990)...
