The workplace has been the center of the information revolution and often reflects the latest technological developments. ... An example of one of these innovations is web cam technology, which was launched just recently and is now being used as surveillance in the workplace. I define workplace as a place wherein employees work in areas of constant public access, such as malls, elevators, car parks, lobbies, etc. Web cam technology has made it possible to send and receive video images throughout the internet . Firms use web cams to be able to monitor their employees while working, and this has led to much controversy regarding respecting worker privacy (Catlin, 1999). Social change in this paper is the shift of the conditions in the working environment, from a camera-free workplace to a workplace under the surveillance of the camera, specifically web cams. To what extent should we allow video surveillance in the workplace? Many employees believe that the use of video surveillance has a substantial impact on their working environment (Dixon, 1995) My paper aims to discuss the positive and negative consequences of the use of the web cam in monitoring employees in the workplace, and its effect on social change in society.
