1. In Margaret Atwood’s A Handmaid’s Tale, she describes an overly controlled setting containing characters that are stifled and submissive in almost everyway. She does, however, give us glimpses into their thoughts and feelings that silently break through the barriers set for them. One that I particularly appreciated was when Offred was returning home and passed the men guarding the gate. She knew that they were watching, “touching with their eyes”, so she swung her hips a bit more. She was a shamed at first for teasing them, but then realized that she wasn’t ashamed at all, “[She] enjoyed the power.” While she lived in a society that gave no power to women, especially those in her position, she still had her femininity, her body and sexuality that served as “powers” that couldn’t be taken away.
