John Adams Correspondences With Abigail
Abigail had many concerns and common themes that she related to her husband in her
letters. She relates to John in most of her correspondences that she misses him dearly and is
concerned for his health and wellbeing. She mentions that the children also miss him and
she wants to hear form him. Reminding me of a modern day woman, she often speaks of
friends, family, and neighbors. She seems to keep up on everyone's whereabouts. Much of her
time is spent updating John on the health of everyone. At one point she speaks of
being confined with jaundice and rheumatism, where she relates that "she took a puke and was
relieved". Another subject is the weather. She talks of draught, that later turns to rain that is so
excessive it causes loss of much of their apples. She also blames the rain for much of the illness
and is hoping for a cold spell to kill off the germs...
