In chapter 16 unit 5 it talks about education. Education was a loftly goal that was out of reach of most nineteenth-century Americans. However, as the new century began, more and more Americans were able to take advantage of educational opportunities. The school teachers were very restricted of what they could and couldn’t do in their daily lives. If you were to marry, or engage you would be dismissed. You had to fill lamps, and clean chimneys. Every teacher should set aside some money for future references. Americans flocked to new forms of entertainment, sports, and music during the period of the late 1880s to 1915. Vaudeville was introduced as a inexpensive variety show. Baseball was huge so as the movies, circus, and amusement parks. Yellow journalism sprung up. African Americans found their hopes of equality dashed after Reconstruction by white attitudes, customs, and the law. Yet many blacks not only resisted discrimination but achieved success in spite of it. Changes in women’s lives, including new jobs, new educational opportunities, and new roles in the home and the marketplace, fueled a debate over the proper role of women in society.
