I agree with the speaker insofar as that government should be cautious when funding those scientific researches whose consequences are not clear. Indeed, no one knows whether these researches will benefit humans or not or even lead to a disaster. Nonetheless, the government should not fail to support scientific researches simply because their results are unknown.
Government’s scruples to invest in the scientific researches with no clear consequences usually involves two factors. ... If a country is in such a bad shape as its unemployment rate is high, or there is even a famine, there is no doubt that the eradication of poverty should be the priority of that government. Under such circumstances, making an appropriation of public funds to support the researches with unpredictable results does not seem to be appropriate and rational.
