"Now, Voyager" was released in 1942 and was directed by Irving Rapper. It starred Bette Davis as Charlotte Vale and Paul Henreid as Jerry Durrance.
The story begins with Mrs. Vale in her exquisite mansion in Boston, demanding outrageous things of her servants. She is a nasty old lady with a chip on her shoulder. Her daughter-in-law, Leeza, brings a doctor to the home to help determine what may be wrong with her husband's youngest sister, Charlotte. Just before introducing Charlotte, there is a close-up of the mother's hands, and she is twiddling her thumbs very nervously, almost as if the anticipation of Charlotte's arrival is making her uneasy. As the mother begins to tell the doctor what a horrible little frumpy daughter Charlotte is, you see a close-up of a pair of chubby legs walking down a flight of stairs (the mother's story is voiced-over). As these feet approach the bottom of the stairs, the camera pans up the person's body, then stops on her face. It is revealed that the feet in fact belong to Charlotte...
